SA: Domestic violence 45 times likelier against Aboriginal women
Federal Minister for the Status of Women AMANDA VANSTONE says indigenous domestic violence
is a difficult issue which can no longer be swept under the carpet.
Senator Vanstone made the comment when launching the Walking into Doors campaign, aimed
at fighting domestic violence in Aboriginal communities.
The minister says the need for such campaigns is obvious when research shows indigenous
women are 45 more time more likely to victims of domestic violence than non-indigenous
women.
The $300,000 awareness campaign will include community forums where indigenous people
can talk about the impact of family violence.
The campaign's title, Walking Into Doors, comes from indigenous singer ARCHIE ROACH's
song about violence.
Senator VANSTONE says the campaign has been designed by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people.
