Schenectady Singh spends most of her days hidden behind her desk, papers scattered and cellphone an arm's length away. Even with her hair swept up in a quick ponytail and glasses propped on top of her head, she gives off an aura of grandness -- which suits her just fine.
If the petite native of India stood up, she would be no taller than a nearby cabinet, no more imposing than an infant Serena Williams.
But there, sitting behind her wooden desk, Nitty Singh is in control. International tennis executives are a phone call away, as are national sponsors and city officials. The New York Buzz owner can -- and has -- called on all three groups through the years, particularly in July, when the World TeamTennis season rolls around.
She's fought so many battles in her 30-year quest to bring elite tennis to the Capital Region that even when her cellphone rings and bad news awaits, Singh doesn't get flustered.
It happened this past Thursday. Four days before the Buzz season was to begin, Singh was dealt a major blow. Boris Becker, the team's newest and dearest addition, would not be arriving in town early enough to attend a VIP dinner set up in his honor.
