Qld: Teachers to change pay campaign tactics

BRISBANE, Aug 5 AAP - Queensland teachers, banned from protected legal industrial action
over their pay claims, will launch a community and political campaign on Wednesday.

Up to 1,000 teachers are expected to rally outside state parliament from 4.00pm, a
spokeswoman for the Queensland Teachers' Union said.

On Friday the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission ordered the teachers' campaign
to arbitration and ruled against further strike action by the 42,000 union members in
Queensland.

The teachers are seeking parity with their colleagues in other states.

The state government has offered 12.5 per cent increases over three years, but the
teachers want increases of up to 18 per cent over three years.

Their industrial campaign temporarily thwarted, the QTU will change tactics, the spokeswoman
said.

Teachers have threatened to ban voluntary work and to take other action not covered
by the industrial court's decision.

"This is stage two of the campaign," the QTU spokeswoman said.

"This is where the Queensland government discovers what 42,000 very angry teachers
look like," she said.
