FED:Gillard pledges support for Illawarra=5

Ms Gillard said the government had to create policies for overall circumstances and
not for single issues.

The prime minister was asked about BlueScope Steel knowing for six months that it would
have to axe workers.

"As prime minister, I don't walk around defining working conditions for one workplace," she said.

"But obviously I am strongly motivated by seeing working people treated decently and
with respect."

That was why Labor "went to hell and back" to get rid of the Howard government's contentious
Work Choices regime.
